Suicide Loss Toolkit

Toolkit for People Who Have Been Impacted by Suicide Loss

The Mental Health Commission of Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention, the Centre for Suicide Prevention, the Public Health Agency of Canada, along with an Advisory Committee comprised of people with lived experience related to suicide, have developed toolkits to support people who have been impacted by suicide. One toolkit is tailored for people who have attempted suicide, and the other is focused on resources for people who have lost someone to suicide.

Guide for People & Families Struggling with Suicide

This comprehensive resource is designed for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts, as well as their loved ones, offering practical tools and compassionate support. Created by clinicians and people with lived experience, the guide explains how to recognize warning signs, understand risk and protective factors, create a safety plan, communicate effectively, and access crisis services. It also includes a full safety-plan template.
The guide emphasizes that suicidal thoughts often reflect unbearable pain—not a desire to die—and that asking directly about suicide does not increase risk, but opens space for hope and help.
